I offer a webmaster/developer package that may suite your needs. Starts at $88.00 for 6 mo.

With a New account we will:

  • Perform an initial check of Domain Name and DNS records.
  • Run starter Security Checks.
  • Run a Theme Check.
  • Gather insights about your website.
  • Perform a good complete backup.
  • Place your website into our automated “Day Check” system.

With an Established account we will:

  • Perform updates as needed!
  • Monitor your web site once every day to insure up time.
  • check backups.
  • Attend to any issues within the scope of maintenance services.
  • We will steer you toward plugins and services that may help you.

As your site matures:

  • We will be able to assist with recovery of data and images.
  • We will always be here to assist with troubleshooting any issues.
  • We will continue to assist you with plugin updates and additions.
  • Should you change themes, we will be ‘at the ready’ if there’s an issue.
  • Some changes are simple. We will gladly perform initial install and changes to themes and plugins as time permit. We don’t build websites but we will assist you as you build.

Exceptions and Additions:

  • You get a total of one hour of service as needed every month (up to a  $35.00 value each month).
  • You get a total of 6 hours of service as needed within the standard six month contract period. (other contract periods are prorated).
  • We won’t stop work should your requirements go slightly over the monthly hour. Service is our priority.
  • Should your needs go over the allotted time we will work with you to find a more economical outside solution, a division of work or doing the work per our hourly rate (currently $35.00 – $75.00 an hour).
  • We try to perform our work unobtrusively and as needed in a timely manner. You will be provided a phone number, an emergency number and contact info in case you ever need to contact us in a hurry.

Staging issues:

We maintain a staging server and will be happy to let you use an account there if you need to stage changes offline. It’s not a production server but should server the purpose.

The other day I noticed he has introduced a Mobile App for automating the running of a bar, www.thebarhq.com. I would think that this software, coming from Jon Taffer, would have to be great and a real boost to running a bar.

But it got me to thinking, the websites I build and maintain (maybe your website?) either has or can be extended with some real handy tools and automation systems. I’ve been installing Sugar CRM and the Revive Ad Server and tying those into my own websites.

What had happened was this company (or their agent), in a bid to gain more exposure and backlinks, hired a company who then posted off-topic on one of my websites and probably many others. The client company then found out all those posts in non-relevant forums and websites may be costing them a better ranking on Google.

I informed them that in order to post on my site they (or their employee or else agent) would have created an account there and I must insist they login and edit or else remove their own post(s).

The truth is there’s little you can do about backlinks but hope the ones you have further your promotional efforts. The best way to control this is to never hire anyone to ‘promote your website’ who touts some magical ability to bring you huge increases in web traffic.

Do a good job on your site and its content – the traffic will find their way there!

As a Web Developer I can offer you a very unique service.  I’ll be glad to step in as your webmaster and assist you and your team to reach whatever goals you might have for your website. The price? $88.00 every 6 mo.

I usually spend a hour or two the first month making any immediately needed upgrades/changes and performing an initial complete site backup. I’ll also be looking at mapping out needed technical improvements and increasing your social media reach.

In month two and three I’ll be working with you to add images and content while maintaining the site. This portion of the service might also involve helping to familiarize your staff with using the website’s built in services and functions to add information.

After the third or fourth month I hope we will have settled down into a maintenance mode where we continue to monitor your website, perform routine maintenance, backups, and your staff can add information and pictures. I’ll be there every step of the way.

Are you experiencing website downtime?

Are you getting a bunch of excuses from your webhost or designer?

Most website down times can be remedied within the first hour of discovery. Complete server crashes may take a while longer due to the multiplicity of accounts being affected. Depends on the problem, how extensive the damage is and If backups are available.

For a single site malfunction, the proper way is to cure the breach, repair the problem, restore the backup or else put up a ‘In Maintenance’ or ‘Under Construction’ Page. Restore email services if the problem took down email also.. This gets the DNS, web server and email services running and troubleshot. Then the actual site and content can be restored as needed.

So, why do some hosts take for ever? It might be your fault.

Do you have someone actually assigned to liaison with the hosting company?This puts one point of contact on both sides as most hosting operations assign a tech, customer service rep or designer in charge of the trouble ticket and/or account.

Did you ask to store a backup at your office? Do you either have login credentials ‘at the ready’ for all your sites and domains? Or do you have someone to assist if not? (see my offer at end of Note)

If you actually host your site from your office or data center did you store a complete backup copy of the site elsewhere? Do you have someone assigned to drop all projects when there’s a website problem? Or a service company or web professional to assist?

So, why do some hosts take forever? It might be their fault.

Some smaller hosts  run their sites from one server and have no contingency plan in place if that server should crash. They choose to deal with problems as they arise which may overwhelm the staff.

A bigger host might run two or more servers and inter-op between the two with one server doing the master DNS for half the client sites and the other being slave and…. reversing those roles for the other half of their clients.

Same with email. One server is the email server for half the clients while the second if a forwarding server and vice versa. Half the client websites would be hosted on each server.

Some hosting companies or owners are talented artists and designers but fall flat on the technical issues. Being able to fix a PC still leaves you exposed when it comes to the intricacies of running a web server.

So what do you do?

Figure out how critical your site is to your operation…. and when. For instance, you might be running an online store. Availability is key to a a storefront!

You might normally count on your site for passing out information most all year but have several periods when your site needs to provide timely, changing info and possibly deliver ticket sales or other items.

You might find your site can survive multiple sever downtime instances due to your extensive use of social media. (This might be the right place for a forwarding ‘In Maintenance’ page when the web site/page is down. Forwarding to a Facebook type page after a brief message for example).

What to do?

You might want to hire some outside vendor or expert just to deal with backups, copies, server info, and recover issues. That’s part of what I do. Give me (Jeff) a call (540)-440-1850.
